The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) is the national accountancy body responsible for regulating and developing the accounting profession in Malaysia. Sweetmag was first engaged to fully revamp MIA's website, and has since remained on as their long-term managed services partner.

Challenge

MIA's original website was built internally on a non-web-friendly stack, which meant even basic content updates were difficult despite technically running on a CMS. The site also depended heavily on MIA's internal IT team whenever something went wrong, with no cloud hosting to fall back on, so any server issue became an internal IT fire drill rather than something MIA's communications team could handle or escalate to a dedicated web partner. The result was a site that struggled to stay current, member and staff complaints about outdated content were a recurring problem, not an occasional one.

Goal

Rebuild MIA's website on a properly maintainable platform with cloud hosting, removing MIA's dependency on internal IT for day-to-day site health, while restructuring content into a more guided, navigable format that MIA's communications team could actually manage themselves.

Replatforming to a Maintainable, Cloud-Hosted CMS

Sweetmag rebuilt MIA's site on WordPress with cloud hosting, moving away from a non-web-friendly internal stack that had made simple updates unnecessarily difficult. This removed MIA's reliance on internal IT for server issues and gave the communications team a platform actually built for content management.

Member & Member Firm Search Integration

Sweetmag built a Member and Member Firm search feature directly into the website, integrated with MIA's CRM to pull accurate, up-to-date member data in real time. This gave site visitors a genuinely useful, self-service way to verify member and firm status without needing to contact MIA directly.

Content Restructuring for Better Navigation

Beyond the platform change, Sweetmag restructured MIA's content into a more guided, better-navigated format, directly addressing the outdated-content complaints from members and staff that had plagued the previous site.

Ongoing Managed Services

Since the replatforming, Sweetmag has provided MIA with continuous managed services, covering active maintenance, uptime monitoring, error fixes, software version updates, and security handling for issues like hacking or malware, along with WhatsApp, phone, and email support. This ongoing relationship has meaningfully reduced the volume of member and staff complaints about outdated or unmaintained content.

Beyond the core website, Sweetmag has supported MIA on sub-campaigns, including the MIA DTAA, an annual initiative where accounting firms submit ideas on digitalising their processes, judged by a panel of accountants and industry figures. Sweetmag reactivated MIA's existing WordPress-based adjudication system after roughly two years dormant, preserving all historical submissions, adjudicator profiles, and scoring records, while updating the platform for current security and compatibility standards, expanding submission categories, and customising the evaluation panel to reflect revised judging criteria for the new cycle.
